Amazon Opens Sidewalk to IoT Developers
Opens opportunities for developers of IoT tracking and monitoring
Amazon AMZN 0.00%↑ announced this week that it is opening its Sidewalk LoRa-based low-power wide-area (LPWA) network to IoT developers. Sidewalk, which covers more than 90 percent of the U.S. population, not only links smart home devices, but features IoT tracking and monitoring.
Through AWS IoT Core for Amazon Sidewalk, companies can accelerate the cloud onboarding process for Sidewalk-enabled devices and access more than 200 AWS services and capabilities. In addition, software development kits that support Sidewalk technology are distributed through Nordic Semiconductor, Silicon Labs, Texas Instruments TXN 0.00%↑, and module vendor Quectel.
Besides smart cities and infrastructure, Amazon said a major Sidewalk application will be asset tracking and management. With AWS IoT Core for Amazon Sidewalk, companies can track assets, such as equipment, goods, machinery, or vehicles, monitor their performance and communicate notifications, the company said.

TomTom Powers 10 Million Vehicles With ADAS Maps
TomTom [TOM2] has announced that more than 10 million automated vehicles sold by carmakers in North America and Europe are powered by its advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) maps and software. The company, which counts 30 automotive brands as customers for its maps and software, said the figure has doubled over the last year.
“Today, we power over ten million automated vehicles on the road with our ADAS maps, winning overall market share in the AV solutions market,” said Mike Schoofs, TomTom chief revenue officer, in a statement. "We have consistently outperformed the already strong growth in the market, which is proof of the quality and robustness of our ADAS solutions."
One of the major market drivers, the recent European Union requirement that all vehicles have intelligent speed assistance, has spurred interest in the company’s Virtual Horizon, which covers both the data and a software suite to display the data. The regulation has been mandatory for all vehicles types since July 2022.
HERE and Continental Power IVECO’s Commercial Vehicles
TomTom’s rival, HERE Technologies, along with Continental, are using the mapping company’s data and Continental’s eHorizon platform to enable IVECO commercial vehicles to meet the EU’s intelligent speed assistance requirement.
Continental will provide vehicle positioning, data aggregation and scalable 4G/5G telematics control unit, the company said. HERE will deliver speed limit information for EU roads and additional geospatial content for ADAS.

Hivemapper Collects 1 Million Kilometers of Street-Level Imagery
Hivemapper has announced that it has collected more than 1 million kilometers of unique street-level imagery. The company says it has done this in just the past three months—and noted it took Google Street View GOOG 0.00%↑ more than five times as long to collect the same data.
Hivemapper says its Hivemapper Map contributors have mapped unique places where Google Street View does not have coverage. The company believes that as more individual contributors join its Hivemapper Network, the underserved regions mapped will be a huge market differentiator.
According to a blog, the company will soon launch Hivemapper Fleets, to add fleet managers and drivers. “Fleets are more likely to collect better quality imagery because they will mount the Hivemapper Dashcam,” the blog said. The company believes the next 10 million kilometers mapped will come from fleet data.
The company also said that its coverage is better, saying 50 Uber drivers in London can generate 10,000 to 15,000 unique road miles per week to its network. In addition, mail delivery vehicles can be added to the network as they visit most parts of a given city each day.
