CNH Industrial to Acquire Hemisphere GNSS for $175 Million
The deal gives CNH Industrial full control of its navigation technologies for ag, construction.
Construction and agriculture equipment giant CNH Industrial CNHI 0.00%↑ has entered into an agreement to purchase Hemisphere GNSS from China-based Unistrong for an estimated $175 million. The company said that Hemisphere, when combined with its Raven agriculture brand, will give it full control over precision and navigation technologies.
However, Hemisphere, with operations in the United States, Canada and Australia, will continue to operate as a standalone unit, the company said. Hemisphere is known for its GNSS solutions for agriculture, machine control, construction, mining and marine industries.
“This move enhances our automation and autonomy tech stack and broadens our talent pool,” said Marc Kermisch, CNH Industrial’s chief digital and information officer, in a statement. “Having Hemisphere’s technology in-house will enable us to accelerate a broad range of our precision technology programs, providing our customers with immediate productivity-enhancing solutions. It will also increase the long-term competitiveness and flexibility of our agriculture and construction portfolio.”
The deal, which will be funded with “cash on hand,” is expected to close in the third quarter of 2023 after regulatory review, CNH Industrial said.
Last year, CNH Industrial, which purchased U.S-based Raven for $2.1 billion in 2021, separated its truck and bus unit, Iveco Group, to focus on machinery and construction equipment, according to Reuters.
CNH Industrial, with 37,000 worldwide employees, is known for its agriculture and construction equipment brands that include Case IH, New Holland Agriculture, STEYR and Raven, to name a few.

Aeris, Trimble Close Recent Acquisitions
Aeris Communications has announced it closed the acquisition of Ericsson’s ERIC 0.00%↑ IoT Accelerator and Connected Vehicle Cloud businesses and assets. Ericsson, which will take a small stake in the new Aeris entity, said that its IoT business has been the “key driver” of financial loss.
The new Aeris will focus on connecting million of IoT devices in the healthcare, fleet, utilities and automotive industries. The Aeris Connected Vehicle Business will serve “a growing list of automotive OEMs” to deploy and monetize their connected vehicle fleets, the company said.
Overall, the merged businesses will create what the companies call the largest IoT-first connectivity management service platforms. As part of the deal, of which financial details were not disclosed, Ericsson former IoT employees will be integrated into the new Aeris entity.
Last year, Ericsson said that while the division was expected to post net sales of more than $76 million, it confirmed that its foray into IoT has not been successful. In fact, the IoT market has suffered from fragmentation as IBM $IBM and Google $GOOG have exited it in high-profile moves.
Trimble Closes Transporeon Acquisition
Westminster, Colo.-based Trimble TRMB 0.00%↑ closed the previously announced acquisition of Ulm, Germany-based Transporeon for 1.88 billion euros. Transporeon will be part of Trimble’s Transportation Segment, the company said.
The deal, an all-cash transaction with Transporeon’s largest shareholder Hg, allows Trimble to have access to 145,000 carriers and logistics service providers and 1,400 shippers through its Europe-based transportation management platform.
Transporeon, with 18 global offices and more than 1,400 employees, gives Trimble a entity that may generate 190 million euro in revenue next year, the company said.

KINEXON Tracks NCAA Basketball Tournament Players
In a high-profile—and cool—use of location technology, KINEXON’s ultra-wideband technology (UWB) was used by several college teams in this year’s NCAA Basketball Tournament, also known as March Madness. Each player wore a tag device to generate real-time data and actionable insight, said Oliver Trinchera, KINEXON co-founder and CEO.
The data includes movement, acceleration, speed, jump height, g-force, shocks and other metrics, Trinchera said. “All metrics can be visualized using KINEXON’s analytics platform, which is compatible with nearly any device or computer. Baseline reporting is implemented to provide an overview of both player and team performance,” he said.
Measuring these metrics helps design practices and drills to prepare for game level demands, prevent overuse by monitoring seasonal workloads, inform return-to-play protocols for injured players based on baseline practice and game data, and enable long term data analysis on style-of-play to help develop players, the company said.
Schools using the technology in the men’s tournament include Creighton, Iowa, Kansas, Memphis, Mississippi State, Missouri, Purdue, University of Miami, University of Tennessee and West Virginia. In the woman’s tournament, national champion LSU, Colorado, Creighton, Iowa, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Purdue, Stanford, University of Miami, University of North Carolina, University of South Carolina, University of Tennessee and West Virginia each used KINEXON technology.
Other sports use KINEXON technology to monitor player and live ball tracking, including soccer, American football, hockey and handball, the company said. “80 percent of NBA teams use the technology, Trinchera said. “We’re FIFA’s preferred provider for live player and ball tracking. Very small and lightweight sensors were embedded in each match ball during the World Cup last year.”
Besides sports teams, the company’s tracking technology is being used in the aerospace, automotive, manufacturing and other industries to capture real-time data. “For automotive OEMs and their suppliers, this data helps identify bottlenecks and inefficiencies during production/assembly. The data also allows for automation of operations by providing real-time, highly accurate data from moving assets,” Trinchera said. “BMW uses KINEXON technology to let autonomous robots move goods efficiently and precisely around production and assembly sites. Continental tracks over 3,200 carriers in real time across a space spanning the equivalent to four soccer fields, with zero interference.”
