Deloitte’s SpaceTech Report Says GNSS Will Grow To $547 Billion
But low-Earth orbit markets will be the hottest going forward...
Deloitte’s SpaceTech report, released June 14, says that GNSS, valued at more than $220 billion in 2021, is projected to reach $547 billion by 2031. The report said that as AI improves the capabilities of robotics and autonomous vehicles, associated devices will continue to use GNSS sensors as new use cases arise.
However, the report says the hot area in space is low Earth orbit (LEO) markets. LEO alone “could see an eightfold increase in today's economic value by 2035 with the right investment and incentivization,” according to Deloitte.
Lower launch costs have led to a space “gold rush,” as corporations race to fill LEO with services, infrastructure, and research, the report said. Many companies are developing LEO systems and equipment to augment GPS and other GNSS for such commercial applications as autonomous vehicles, drone delivery services, critical infrastructure and other markets.
Deloitte said that Earth observation and remote sensing, which only accounts for 10 percent of the total space market share, will see growth to $8 billion by 2030 and $25 billion by 2040—up from the current $8 billion now. Deloitte sees high-quality images of the Earth important for such applications as supply chain, real-time precision tracking, navigation, traffic, weather, pollution, disease-spread, agriculture and mining to the drivers.
The report, which reviews the most active and growing space segments, says that space is no longer the exclusive domain of government agencies and private space companies. Such organizations as transportation, finance, manufacturing, pharmaceutical, research and communications that have never been viewed as space companies are viewing space as an opportunity for disruption.
In earlier Deloitte studies this year, the firm said that self-driving cars are another reason to put satellites into space as self-driving cars will never be a reality without good internet, said Massimiliano Ladovaz, OneWeb’s CTO. “Essentially, self-driving cars will be laptops on wheels,” he said.

Hexagon-NovAtel Receivers Track Xona PULSAR LEO Signal Generated By Spirent Simulator
Hexagon-NovAtel have announced a successful test demonstrating their OEM7 GNSS receivers to track Xona Space Systems’ PULSAR signals, which are generated by a Spirent Communications simulator. This test shows that NovAtel GNSS receivers can track a Spirent simulated L-band signal identical to the PULSAR signal broadcast by Xona’s low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellites.
As part of the 2023 Joint Navigation Conference technical program this week, Spirent, Xona, and NovAtel will share initial test results.
Another company, Septentrio, announced this week it is working with Xona to develop an experimental receiver which is compatible with the PULSAR signal. The multi-frequency receiver will be one of the first to decode all PULSAR signals in parallel with other standard GNSS signals, the company said.
Xona’s PULSAR system will eventually consist of 260 LEO satellites orbiting the Earth 25 times closer than GPS satellites. The higher signal power from its proximity to Earth and modernized design allow for better multipath mitigation and higher accuracy—along with increased interference and spoofing detection, the company said.
Orolia Rebrands as Safran Federal Systems
Also at JNC, Safran’s [SAFRY] Orolia Defense & Security, announced that it will re-brand under a new name, Safran Federal Systems. The Safran Federal Systems inertial navigation portfolio now includes the Hemispherical Resonator Gyro (HRG) Crystal technology, the company said.

TomTom Traffic Data Powers New PTV Group Automated Transport Modeling Solution
TomTom [TOM2] has announced it is integrating its traffic data with PTV Group’s automated transport modeling solution, PTV Model2Go. The deal allows PTV Group to leverage TomTom’s origin and destination (O/D) traffic data to reduce the time it takes to model transportation patterns in cities or regions, the company said.
By combining TomTom’s traffic data, PTV Model2Go will analyze millions of trips, to include preferred routes and most-driven streets, the company said. The target customer will be users that include transportation administration, industry and research.
“By analyzing millions of trips globally and anonymizing that information for analysis, TomTom’s data will open a broad array of research possibilities and enable transport planners and cities to make informed, accurate decisions about the way traffic flows,” said Mike Schoofs, TomTom’s CRO, in a statement.
The companies say that the cloud-based solution will delivers automated network and demand transportation models in as little as one week by leveraging data from more than 600 million connected devices.
